Vietnam Multimedia Corporation Speeds Nation-wide Adoption of Mobile TV Services with Irdeto’s Solution

Deal marks Irdeto’s first global commercial agreement to simulcrypt an existing DVB-H platform

Singapore, CommunicAsia — 17 June 2009 — Irdeto, an expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, today announced a deal to supply Vietnam Multimedia Corporation (VTC), the country’s leading national broadcaster and operator in digital broadcasting, with the latest Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) technology. When commercially deployed by the end of 2009, VTC’s subscribers can choose to watch premium content from over 12 digital TV channels on any DVB-H enabled mobile phones and handheld devices.

Utilizing Irdeto’s solution, VTC’s mobile TV service will be introduced initially in the capital city of Hanoi, with plans to extend the coverage across Vietnam over a three year period. The deployment of Irdeto’s DVB-H technology is part of the broadcaster’s aggressive plans to grow its subscriber base, to speed up the subscriber’ take-up rate of mobile TV services and to offer new ways for consumers to view content away from traditional TV screens.

Irdeto’s solution was selected because it is able to simulcrypt with the broadcaster’s existing DVB-H platform, which allows VTC to protect its initial infrastructure investment. In addition, subscribers to VTC’s mobile TV services will have ready access to pay-TV content on-the-go via any handheld device, including mobile phones, portable media players and other devices based on the DVB-H Mobile TV architecture.

“Our mission has always been about providing the best entertainment to our subscribers,” said Le Van Khuong, Deputy CEO of VTC, “The migration to digital TV within the region, coupled with the proliferation of feature-rich digital devices, has created new platforms for the consumption of digital content. We are confident that our partnership with Irdeto to deploy its robust DVB-H solution will help us meet our goals to add new dimensions to our subscribers’ TV viewing experience.”

“As the content consumption patterns rapidly change in Southeast Asia, Irdeto will continue to help companies like VTC attain its goal in making mobile TV available to a wider audience,” said Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto. “Our proven content protection solutions will continue to help broadcasters such as VTC to improve their customer service and reduce churn, in addition to exploring new revenue streams.”

The telecommunications scene in Vietnam has showed strong signs of growth in recent years. Mobile penetration is about 33%, or about an estimated 28 million mobile subscribers in the country, as at end 2007, and the annual growth rate in the mobile sector is about 75% per year, according to telecommunications analyst firm, BuddeComm.

A major television company in Vietnam, VTC was set up in 1988 with the aim of developing the country in the areas of technology and multimedia. Currently VTC offers nine HD channels and 32 SD channels with premium content ranging from sports, technology, lifestyle and entertainment
