Irdeto Leads Innovation in the Broadcast Conditional Access Arena with First Independently Audited One-Way Software CA Solution
Irdeto Universal Client judged by security expert T-Systems to be “suitable for implementation in one-way broadcast environments”
AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands — IBC 2009 — 11 September 2009 — Irdeto, a leading expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, today announced that Germany-based experts T-Systems have completed a comprehensive audit of the Irdeto Universal Client one-way software CA client and judged it to be “secure for implementation in a commercial broadcast environment”. This third-party validation of the new Irdeto CA client provides content producers and broadcasters with independent assurance that their content is in safe hands with Irdeto.
The Irdeto Universal Client is the industry’s first commercially launched, one-way, broadcast conditional access software client. It is based on Irdeto’s 20 plus years of experience in broadcast conditional access and uses key software protection technologies from Irdeto’s Group company Cloakware that set it apart from any other software CA solution. The latest version of the Cloakware Security Suite is used to protect both the Universal Client code and the sensitive security data it processes through patented obfuscation and data transformation techniques, making it difficult to tamper with or reverse engineer the Universal Client software.
In addition, each Universal Client is cryptographically locked to its host device in cooperation with leading silicon vendors like Broadcom and ST Microelectronics. This allows Irdeto to deliver operators a software-only security solution that can provide protection similar to that of smart cards. The solution is fully compliant with the technical requirement for a hardware-based 'root of trust' as expressed by organizations like the Motion Picture Association of America, (MPAA), the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and CableLabs. The solution is also highly renewable via secure software downloads over the network.
“Irdeto has worked with T-Systems for more than 10 years to independently audit and validate our conditional access technology,” said David Canellos, senior vice president of Irdeto Sales and Marketing. “The benefit for our customers is clear: more piracy-free years and fewer smart card swaps than any other vendor’s solution. We predict that Irdeto Universal Client customers will enjoy the same benefits of our cooperation with this internationally respected ICT security expert.”
“For over 20 years, we have been providing our expertise on all aspects of ICT-security to our client companies; including security experts like Irdeto,” said Robert Hammelrath, Head of Security Analysis & Testing of T-Systems. “Through our relationship with Irdeto over the past 10 years, we have worked closely with them as objective, third-party experts, and the result is a better, more reliable product that is independently verified. Now both Irdeto’s smart card and Universal Client customers will benefit from that peace of mind.”
