Irdeto Secures Leadership Spot in China’s Pay-TV Market
Robust industry growth based on country’s adoption of digital TV underpin company’s position as China’s top international conditional access provider
Singapore, CommunicAsia — 16 June 2009 — Irdeto, a leading expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, is ranked as China’s top international provider of conditional access (CA), according to the latest report by In-Stat, a leading high-tech industry analyst firm. Supplying a 17% share of the country’s total CA devices in 2008, Irdeto has established a strong foothold in populous provinces like Jilin and Shaanxi. According to research findings by In-Stat, total subscribers of digital cable TV in China reached a massive 46.7 million at the end of 2008.
Growth potential is strong for the Chinese pay-TV market. More than 70 cities in the country have completed digitalization and the set-top box market revenue is projected to peak in 2011 at US$766.3 million as interactive set-top boxes are expected to become a significant part of the Chinese market, according to In-Stat.
Although current cable operators are not generating substantial profits from TV content, there is a large market potential present as In-Stat foresees an increase in operators’ emphasis to offer video-on-demand and premium channels when China switches to full digital TV by 2015. In particular, opportunities abound for CA vendors who can provide high-performing, high-security solutions that will enable cable operators to introduce premium channels and advanced digital TV services to their subscribers, according to the firm.
“Irdeto has a long history in the Chinese market and we are pleased to be acknowledged as the number one international conditional access technology provider in China,” stated Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto. “Our dedication to digital content security has made us a natural partner choice for large and emerging cable operators in China. We will continue to build upon our success to deliver cost-effective solutions that enable operators to explore new ways to monetize their TV content, and to introduce new levels of digital TV viewing experiences to their subscribers.”
