BEIJING – 13 May 2013 – Irdeto, a world leader in media protection, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Alibaba Group intended to formally support and reconfirm commitment to anti-piracy initiatives aimed at protecting Irdeto pay media customers on the Alibaba Group e-commerce platforms.
Mr. Bengt Jonsson, Irdeto VP Sales APAC, and Mr. Chen Jianhua, Senior Manager of Alibaba Group Information Security Department sign an MOU asserting a strong commitment to fighting media piracy, an ongoing challenge for pay TV operators and broadcasters across Asia-Pacific.
The MOU is in response to investigations that found an increasing number of advertisements for pirate devices on key Alibaba and Taobao B2B sites, including http://www.1688.com, http://www.alibaba.com, http://www.aliexpress.com, and http://www.taobao.com. Pirate devices, designed to facilitate unauthorized access to pay TV content, included card-sharing set top boxes, satellite and GSM sharing dongles and card splitters.
Mr. Bengt Jonsson, Irdeto VP Asia Pacific, explained, “We applaud Alibaba Group for recognizing the need to adopt strict intellectual property initiatives that support the protection of businesses, their technology and content. This MOU is an important step in the development of China’s intellectual property environment that will help protect the revenues of our pay media customers.”
Mr. CHEN Jianhua, Senior Manager of Alibaba Group’s Information Security Department, stated, “As a leader in the e-commerce industry, Alibaba Group places great importance on the protection of intellectual property rights. We are very happy to establish cooperation with a world leader in media protection, and we believe this marks the beginning of a partnership that will help ensure the protection of intellectual property in China.”
Mr. Jonsson signed the MOU on behalf of Irdeto with Mr. CHEN at the Alibaba Group offices in Hangzhou, China.
