Movimento Brings Best-of-Breed Security Technology to Car Ecosystem

LAS VEGAS, CES – 04 January 2016 – Irdeto and Movimento today announced they are collaborating to provide in-vehicle and over the air (OTA) security for car makers and car drivers alike. Movimento is the OTA platform leader in the auto industry, while Irdeto is a global digital platform security company renowned for its innovative cybersecurity technology in the media sector. Irdeto has been a leader in cybersecurity for over 45 years and is part of Naspers, an $8 billion multinational media and Internet conglomerate.

Irdeto and Movimento are bringing their respective expertise to auto manufacturers so that OTA software updates within future cars are protected against tampering and other intrusion-type techniques, such as reverse engineering. This solution will provide peace of mind to consumers in addition to detecting and reporting intrusions. The solution will also deliver and deploy security patches without impacting vehicle operations.

“Irdeto is the gold standard in digital platform security and an expert in cryptography, piracy and cybercrime,” said Mahbubul Alam, Movimento CTO. “Irdeto’s technology has been proven at large scale in the media industry, and now we’re bringing this outstanding technology to the auto industry for the first time. It’s part of our strategy to identify best-of-breed products and incorporate them into cars. We’re building an ecosystem of unparalleled solutions that will further realize a compelling software-defined car.”

As modern automobiles have increasingly become dependent on software for a wide range of capabilities, multiple media reports of “hacked” cars have appeared. Although not widely prevalent, those incidents have been publicized within the popular press. Thus, Movimento sought out preeminent security software, selecting Irdeto based on its great success in other large markets. “Even if car hacking is attempted, having top-notch security prevents any potential vulnerabilities,” Alam said.

“As automotive software and networking have rapidly advanced, the delivery of data from the cloud to the car might create another potential access point in the future for unauthorized entry,” said Daniel Thunberg, Global Head, Connected Transportat Irdeto. “We protect the delivery of premium assets for some of the biggest media and device companies in the world. With Movimento, we are bringing this technology to bear in the auto industry where it is very much needed. While car data is encrypted, there are those who would try to reverse engineer the auto’s systems, which is made near-impossible with our technology.”

Movimento’s OTA solutions already have advanced features for secure OTA updates. The Irdeto technology will be added as a deeper layer of security focused on making car software tamperproof. Cars with this combined technology will be with car manufacturers in 2016 and in consumer cars in 2018.

At CES, Irdeto will be showing a live, interactive connected car simulation which demonstrates what it is like when a car is hacked. This demo will be featured at the GENIVI CES 2016 Showcase Reception at Trump Tower at 6:00pm on January 6 and 7 (private, invitation-only), as well as in Irdeto’s CES suite at The Wynn January 6-9.
