AMSTERDAM – 26 October 2017 – Irdeto, the world leader in digital platform security, today announced that its Cloakware® for Connected Transport security solution meets all the stringent requirements set out in the American Vision for Safer Transportation through Advancement of Revolutionary Technologies Act (AV START Act), which passed the U.S. Senate on October 4. The bill is the latest move by the U.S. Government to help set cybersecurity standards for self-driving and autonomous car technology.

In addition to compliance with this most recent bill, Irdeto’s Cloakware for Connected Transport also complies with the requirements of the SELF-DRIVE Act, which is billed as “first-of-its-kind legislation to ensure the safe and innovative development, testing and deployment of self-driving cars.” The SELF DRIVE Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in September.

“The fact that both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives have now approved self-driving car legislation means that we should see some near-term security improvements. We have pushed to ensure that key security features around protection, detection and response are included in the legislation. It is really the cybersecurity amendments that will ensure that this technology develops and reaches the mass market safely,” said Daniel Thunberg, Global Head, Connected Transport, Irdeto.

The AV START Act outlines that: “Each manufacturer of a highly automated vehicle or automated driving system shall develop, maintain and execute a written plan for identifying and reducing cybersecurity risks.” Section 14 of the bill cites the importance of risk-based prioritization, efficient detection, response, isolation and recovery. In addition to incorporating all of these security features into its solution, Cloakware also enables manufacturers and OEMs to ensure that even if a hacker finds a way to penetrate the perimeter, they won’t be able to hold the car hostage.

“With the increasing demands for connectivity in vehicles and the move toward self-driving technology, cybersecurity is paramount in a connected transport industry which is evolving like never before,” said Pasi Nieminen, CEO of Link Motion, a dedicated automotive Carputer company. “The fact that cybersecurity has now been publicly acknowledged by both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives is a crucial step forward for the connected transport industry to develop and deploy safe and secure connected services. Our partnership with Irdeto began earlier this year and ensures our connected users have maximum security and that we meet all the requirements of this latest legislation.”

“Apart from being at the forefront of whitebox cryptography, Irdeto’s Cloakware for Connected Transport has a distinctive cybersecurity advantage of not disclosing keys or the data during computations, which is an essential element for automation security [especially during sensor fusion],” said Niranjan Manohar, Program Manager – Connectivity and Automotive IoT, Frost & Sullivan. “Cloakware’s uniqueness will not only mitigate imminent threats but will also support the Senate’s AV START Act, essentially creating a hack-free driverless future.”

“The understanding of security in the connected transport industry is continuously improving and rapid progress is being made to stay ahead of cybersecurity threats. We adhere to – and enthusiastically support – the security requirements put forward by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. We are ready for this to become law,” adds Thunberg.

Cloakware for Connected Transport is a comprehensive solution that combines innovative, patented technologies and cybercrime services to address a variety of security challenges in a car. Irdeto solutions include strong anti-hacking protection with renewable security, making it virtually impossible to reverse engineer vehicle software. Cloakware provides automakers and tier-one suppliers with a secure, tamper-proof environment supported across multiple OS’s, ensuring that vehicles operate as intended.
