Irdeto Launches North American V2G Trusted Root CA to Accelerate Plug & Charge Adoption
Initiative signifies a major advancement in allowing trusted communication between charging stations and electric vehicles, fully supporting Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Plug & Charge interactions in adherence to ISO 15118 standards.
DETROIT – November 14, 2023 – Irdeto, the world leader in digital platform cybersecurity, today announces the launch of its North American Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Trusted Root Certificate Authority (CA), a pivotal development in the electric vehicle (EV) charging ecosystem that ensures secure authentication and authorization of vehicles, charging stations, and mobility subscriptions.
This initiative is set to boost the widespread adoption of Plug & Charge — the simplest, most secure way for drivers to charge their EVs – by making it as easy as purchasing a mobile phone subscription, with users buying once and charging anywhere. All drivers need to do is connect their EV’s charging cable to any charge point, and the vehicle immediately starts to charge — with no additional user steps such as authentication or payment required at the charging station. In essence, Plug & Charge enables EV drivers to roam freely throughout the charging network.
Plug & Charge incorporates essential Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) components aligned with ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20 standards. PKI enables trust between all participants in the ecosystem against fraud attempts and cyberattacks, therefore creating a seamless customer experience during charging and fully automated communications for efficient billing processes.
As the security backbone of Plug & Charge technology, PKI is critical. Irdeto’s expertise in PKI is unparalleled, and its Key Management Service (KMS) is specifically designed to handle the intricate management of certificates within the PKI framework. With the introduction of a trusted root CA, Irdeto ensures that all entities within the EV charging landscape can establish mutual trust, leveraging the robustness of Asymmetric Cryptography.
The launch represents a major advancement in allowing trusted communication between all charging stations and electric vehicles, fully supporting V2G and Plug & Charge interactions in adherence to the ISO 15118 standards. ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20 are a set of international standards that describe a V2G communication interface. These standards support elements critical to integrating connected cars with smart-grid infrastructure. This simplifies the charging process and fosters a harmonious relationship between vehicles and the power grid, promoting efficiency and reliability.
The challenge of interoperability remains at the forefront of V2G communication. To address the issue, Irdeto is not only introducing a trusted root CA but is also actively working towards interoperability among other root CAs. The company’s partnerships are driving the widespread acceptance and adoption of this technology across the entire ecosystem.
“Irdeto’s reputation for reliability in PKI and KMS solutions is well-founded, and we have issued over a billion certificates to date. By managing PKI in-house, we are able to make the entire process more cost-effective, passing on these savings and efficiencies to our partners and customers.” said Niels Haverkorn, SVP, New Markets at Irdeto.
NEVI Funding
The NEVI Formula Funding Program, anchored in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, commits $5 billion over five years to develop a comprehensive EV charging network along America’s key highways. This ambitious program mandates criteria such as charger specifications, reliable operation, systematic reporting, skilled installation, diligent maintenance, and compliance with domestic production laws. Its vision is to standardize EV charging accessibility nationwide.
Entities like Charge Point Operators and Mobility Service Providers stand to benefit from NEVI funding, covering up to 80% of project costs, provided they adhere to program stipulations including the ISO 15118 standard. Irdeto plays a crucial role in this ecosystem by ensuring these organizations meet the ISO 15118 standards, thus unlocking access to NEVI funding.
The North American V2G Trusted Root CA by Irdeto marks a significant step towards a more integrated, secure, and user-friendly EV charging infrastructure, paving the way for a future where electric vehicles and the power grid operate in seamless synergy. Irdeto’s solutions are crafted with direct industry insight, prioritizing autonomy and flexibility. This independent approach is key to introducing cutting-edge security measures and fostering the development of a more connected and efficient EV charging infrastructure.
