Widevine CLS is retiring. Be ready for what comes next.

Google will permanently retire the Widevine Cloud License Service (CLS) on 13 April 2027. If your video service depends on CLS for license delivery or content key management, you will need to transition before the shutdown.

This is more than a technology change. It is an opportunity to protect service continuity, simplify DRM operations and build a more resilient content protection foundation.

Irdeto is already helping streaming services make this transition, combining proven Widevine SDK migration experience with the scale, reliability and expertise of Irdeto Control.

What does this mean for you?

First, understand whether you need to act.

Irdeto is managing your transition.

For affected Irdeto Control customers, Irdeto is proactively managing the move to the Widevine License SDK, hosted and managed as part of Irdeto Control.

Our teams will work with you on migration planning, validation and rollout, with migrations planned for completion by the end of 2026, well ahead of the Widevine CLS shutdown.

Your Irdeto support team will confirm your specific setup, migration timeline and any actions required from your side.

Keep reading, your service may require action.

If you use the Widevine Cloud License Service directly, rely on Widevine Cloud APIs for content key management, or use another DRM provider whose Widevine service depends on CLS, you may be affected by the shutdown.

Your first step is to confirm your current setup and determine whether a migration is required.

Using another DRM provider? Ask whether their Widevine implementation relies on CLS and what migration plan they have in place.

What is changing?

Widevine DRM is staying. Widevine CLS is not.

Google is retiring its hosted Widevine Cloud License Service while continuing to support Widevine DRM.

If your service currently depends on CLS, you will need an alternative approach to Widevine licensing before 13 April 2027.

You may be affected if you:

  • rely on CLS for Widevine license delivery;
  • use Widevine Cloud APIs for content key generation;
  • depend on a platform or technology provider that uses CLS; or
  • are unsure how Widevine licenses or content keys are currently managed.

Already using the Widevine License SDK? Your service may not be directly affected by the CLS shutdown.

Two dates to know for the CLS transition

16 February 2027
Cloud-based content key generation is expected to stop for affected workflows.

13 April 2027
Widevine Cloud License Service shuts down.

If you use Widevine Cloud APIs for content key management, existing content keys may need to be exported before the relevant shutdown milestones.

April 2027 should be the end of your migration, not the beginning.

How should you act?

Don't just replace CLS. Make the right move for what comes next.

There are broadly two paths forward:

Operate the Widevine SDK yourself Managed Multi-DRM with Irdeto Control
Widevine licensing You deploy and operate it Managed by Irdeto
Infrastructure & operations Your responsibility Managed service
Availability & scale You design and operate it Multi-region, auto-scaling infrastructure
Monitoring & support Your responsibility 24/7 managed services and support
Other major DRMs Additional integrations required Widevine, PlayReady & FairPlay
Migration support Managed internally Support from assessment through rollout
Beyond DRM Additional capabilities required Wider Irdeto protection capabilities available

The right path depends on your architecture, resources and business requirements. Whichever you choose, start early.

Migration can touch much more than license delivery. Consider how your service manages:

Authentication and entitlements
How users and devices are authorized to access content.

Content keys and DRM policies
How keys are generated, stored and delivered and how viewing policies are enforced.

Devices and applications
How Widevine works across browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs and set-top boxes.

Different streaming environments
How licensing performs across live, VOD and IPTV services.

Performance and resilience
How license latency, peak concurrency and availability can affect playback and the viewer experience.

The goal isn't simply to replace CLS. It's to choose a licensing foundation that can support where your streaming business is going next.

Migrate with confidence. Build for what comes next.

Irdeto Control provides managed Multi-DRM services across Google Widevine, Microsoft PlayReady and Apple FairPlay Streaming, giving you a scalable and reliable alternative to operating DRM infrastructure yourself.

And this isn't a migration path we're only preparing for.

Irdeto already has experience migrating large-scale streaming services from Widevine cloud licensing to the Widevine License SDK.

From assessing your current dependencies to migration, validation and rollout, Irdeto can help you make the transition while protecting service continuity and minimizing operational complexity.

Migration should solve more than a deadline.
Use the CLS transition to build a DRM foundation that can protect premium content, scale with demand, reduce operational complexity and support the evolution of your streaming business.

Frequently asked questions
Is Widevine DRM being discontinued?

No. Google is retiring the Widevine Cloud License Service, not Widevine DRM itself.

When will Widevine CLS shut down?

The service is scheduled to be permanently retired on 13 April 2027.

Am I affected?

You may be affected if your service uses CLS for Widevine license delivery or Widevine Cloud APIs for content key generation.

If you already use the Widevine License SDK, the CLS shutdown may not directly affect your service.

What happens if I don't migrate?

Services that remain dependent on CLS risk being unable to obtain the licenses required for Widevine-protected playback after the shutdown.

Do I need to export my content keys?

If you use Widevine Cloud APIs for content key generation, existing keys may need to be exported before the relevant shutdown milestones.

Identifying whether this applies to you should be one of the first steps in your migration assessment.

What are my options?

You can deploy and operate Google's Widevine License Server SDK within your own infrastructure or use a managed DRM/Multi-DRM provider such as Irdeto.

Will older devices still work?

Some legacy devices may require specific handling because of the Widevine provisioning technology they use.

Your existing device ecosystem should therefore be assessed as part of migration planning.

Will I need to change my applications or devices?

It depends on your current implementation. For many Irdeto Control deployments, migration to the hosted Widevine License SDK can be achieved without changes to client devices or applications.

Any specific requirements should be identified during migration planning and validation.

What if my DRM is managed by another provider?

Ask your provider whether its Widevine implementation relies on Google's CLS and, if so, how and when it plans to migrate.

Using a commercial DRM provider does not automatically mean your service is unaffected.

How can Irdeto help?

Irdeto can support you from understanding your current CLS dependencies and defining the right migration approach through integration, content key migration where required, validation and production rollout.
