Irdeto, CharIn, and UL Solutions bring enhanced security to the electric vehicle ecosystem

 

AMSTERDAM, October 4, 2022 – Irdeto, the world leader in digital platform cybersecurity, today announces it has joined forces with the Charging Interface Initiative e.V. (CharIN e.V.), the global association for e- mobility, and UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, to bring enhanced security and convenience to the ecosystem of electric vehicles. The market-leading key life-cycle management service Irdeto Keys & Credentials will set up, operate and oversee the Vehicle-to-Grid Public Key Infrastructure (V2G PKI) on behalf of CharIN. It ensures secure authentication and authorization of vehicles, charging stations, and mobility subscriptions, and enables the Plug & Charge ecosystem in accordance with the ISO 15118 standard. CharIN will offer the PKI as the highest trusted certificate authority with the operative support of Irdeto and UL Solutions, as a neutral and open platform for all European companies supporting Plug & Charge and V2G applications.

In this new partnership, the parties deploy Irdeto Keys & Credentials to secure the CharIN Root Certificate Authority and the relevant policies for the Plug & Charge ecosystem. The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures trust between all participants in the ecosystem against fraud attempts and cyberattacks, therefore enabling a seamless customer experience during charging, fully automated communications for efficient billing processes, and advanced business models.

In the past, the widespread implementation of Plug & Charge has been hindered by missing consensus and unity among the industry as well as the pending standardization of key elements. These were recently finalized in the ISO 15118-20 standard, which Irdeto is the first security provider to commercially fully support. This is in addition to the already existing ISO 15118-2.

CharIN will provide the Root Certificate Authority (V2G Root) for the Plug & Charge ecosystem in Europe while Irdeto will operate the V2G Root on behalf of CharIN as a fully managed service. UL Solutions will support Irdeto with ISO 15118 compliance and acts as a Registration Authority for enrolling new ecosystem participants.

Unlike many other commercial off-the-shelf PKI solutions, Irdeto Keys & Credentials is an adaptable and multi-faceted solution, ready and able to meet the requirements of security, compliance, flexibility, and ability to operate at unprecedented volumes and lifetimes. Currently, Irdeto manages over two billion keys and certificates on behalf of its customers. The partnership sets the standard for secure electric vehicle charging in a world where cybersecurity becomes increasingly vital to ensuring safe operations.
